Thanks David - this is one of my favorite posts, too. In general I wore western clothes almost all the time, with maybe 5 or less exceptions. I found that the Arab world had much more of a "european" style - slicked hair, pointed shoes for men - so it was still quite exotic for someone from Wisconsin. Thanks for posting, and I can't wait to go back to the Arab world again and have something new to write about!

Thanks for this anecedote! My wife is currently teaching in Kuwait, and I visited her four a month over Christmas - and we spent a week in Oman. It was fascinating to spend time in an Arab country, but I found myself with more questions than answers, especially regarding custom and clothing. Therefore I love to hear experiences of those who have learned something in these areas.

Chukran, and Peace!

:) Lovely post :) I have three nice dishdasha for myself. Bought them for various reasons, was given as presents. I actually have traditional Moroccan one, two Emirati ones and one Jordanian. Few weeks ago the weather was insanely hot and I opted for dishdasha. Indeed, THE BEST WAY TO WALK AROUND IN HOT WEATHER! I was expecting thousands of looks at a strange blonde wearing traditional clothes (and no hijab to that!). But instead, the level of catcalling and staring that I got that day was WAAY less than I usually get!! No car honked at me, no dude shouted. Well, only two guys started with 'Hi, how are you' and, all confused, continued with 'kifehalek' :)
Way to go with dishdasha!!! :)
