If you ask me, conspiracy theories under the same principles that give way to people recognizing the image of the Mother Teresa on their grilled cheese. I.e. people are great pattern recognition but terrible at comprehending randomness. Toss in a little paranoia and dissatisfaction with traditional narratives and you got yourself a conspiracy theory.
